One of the greatest comeback stories in college football history happened on November 23, 1984. Boston College was playing the Miami Hurricanes. On the last play of the game, down 45-41, Doug Flutie threw a 70-yard pass that was caught in the end zone by his roommate, Gerard Phelan. Or how about the greatest comeback in NFL history in 1993? When a backup quarterback, Frank Reich, playing in place of injured Jim Kelly, brought the Buffalo Bills back from a 32-point deficit to beat the Houston Oilers. And there’s the Boston Red Sox overcoming a 3-0 series deficit against the New York Yankees, in 2004’s ALCS. Just to name a few of the greatest comebacks in sports history.

Everybody loves a good comeback story. A story about an individual or a group of people, an organization, team, or business, who, when facing impossible adversity, somehow overcomes the odds and wins. History is full of them. Some are legendary, others obscure.

I met a man who was repeatedly abused by his father as a child. He fell into his own cycle of abuse and addiction. He eventually found himself immersed in the pornography industry. One night, after signing autographs at a theatre in New York City, he just walked away. He saw a glimmer of light in the midst of all the darkness that had enveloped his life, and he went for it. Jesus completely turned his life around. He was one of the men that I built a dynamic and growing men’s ministry around when I was in Chicago.

Who doesn’t love a good comeback story? God definitely does! He loves to turn a tragedy into a triumph, a mess into a message, a trial into a testimony. The ultimate comeback story is the story of Jesus. From the ultimate setback of death, Jesus came back to life and proved his victory over death.

This weekend we kick off a new sermon series. Over the summer you’ll hear from all of our pastors as we dig into God’s Word and into the stories of some familiar characters in the Old Testament. We will look at the real-life stories of women and men who experienced a reclamation of their life stories, proving that anything we might experience as a setback, God can turn into comeback – a demonstration of His redemptive power and display of His glory.

Life is full of setbacks, no matter who you are. Financial problems, health issues, emotional trauma, divorce, loss of a loved one, sin and its consequences — these and many more visit all of us. And if you have had a setback, a comeback may feel out of reach and seem impossible to you. But my prayer is that you’ll find God in each of these stories, and that you’ll see what’s possible in Him and through Him.

And while we’re at it, who isn’t rooting for us to make a huge comeback following the many challenges and setbacks we have experienced as a church family and a country over the past 15 months!

To God be the glory for the great things He has done and will do!
