Sailing Or Rowing

By: Pastor Bob Myers

Life in the Spirit is sailing

Life in the flesh is rowing

Rowing depends upon my muscle, my resources

Sailing I still work but the power comes outside in

My flesh can deal with “Let go and let God”

The Holy Spirit invites, “Trust God and get going”

My flesh, “oh my, you’re out of shape”

The Spirit, “Here’s some new running shoes”

My flesh won’t say, “I’m not doing well”

In the Spirit, I admit, “I’m struggling”

My flesh uses successes to build my reputation

The Spirit uses my relapses to build my character

My flesh coddles me

The Spirit treasures me

My flesh avoids sin to avoid Jesus

The Spirit owns failures to show me I’m loved anyways

My flesh has vague “feelings” of guilt

The Spirit deals with REAL guilt

My flesh passively suffers like a martyr

The Spirit chooses redemptive suffering

My flesh slinks into being abused

The Spirit asserts that I have infinite worth

My flesh is a passive bystander watching others suffer

The Spirit activates me against the status quo

My flesh is alert to justice for me

The Spirit awakens me to justice for you and for me

Life in the flesh, “I ought to”

Life in the Spirit, “I get to”

My Flesh wants to be like Jesus

The Spirit wants to be with Jesus

My flesh grinds and powers through

The Spirit ministers out of overflow

The Spirit can make life. Sheer muscle and willpower don’t make anything happen. Every word I’ve spoken to you is a Spirit-word, and so it is life-making. (John 6:63 Msg.)
