What's An Expungement?

By Pastor Bruce Finn

“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?" - Micah 6:8

When Deborah was a young woman, she made bad choices, she invited wrong influences into her life, and she made some mistakes that got her in trouble with the law. She was charged with several non-violent crimes but found not guilty. Little did she realize that the charges themselves would remain on her record and follow her wherever she would go. When she applied for jobs, potential employers didn’t bother to check to see whether she was found guilty or innocent. They saw the charges in her file and passed her by. For twenty years Deborah was only able to find low-paying, menial jobs for minimum wage. She was barely able to support herself and she could never get ahead. It seemed the mistakes she made as a young woman would plague her for the rest of her life.

Then, she was introduced to Christian Legal Clinics of Philadelphia (CLCP), a ministry that provides legal services to people who could not otherwise afford them by Christian attorneys who provide these services in the Name of Jesus. Deborah learned that she needed an expungement, a provision in the law that would give her a clean slate and let her put her criminal record behind her. On the day her case was scheduled for hearing, Deborah stood outside the courthouse with her CLCP lawyer and prayed. She was nervous, but hopeful, knowing that God was in control of the outcome. Suddenly, even before they set foot in the courtroom to give her testimony, a member of the court appeared to report that the judge had granted each of Deborah’s requests and that she was finally free.

Deborah and her lawyers were in shock. They never expected it would go that smoothly or quickly. “Jesus is Lord”, she shouted, “God’s favor was in the house today!” Deborah was given a second chance and a fresh start. Her life has a new beginning with some new and unlikely friends. God was glorified. Jesus’ Name was exalted. And justice was done.

This Sunday morning (April 24, 2022) we will welcome Jaimee Hatcher, Esq., the Executive Director of Christian Legal Clinics of Philadelphia. Jaimee is a devoted follower of Jesus, an accomplished attorney, and a passionate agent of God’s justice and mercy in the city. Jaimee leads a team of more than 130 legal volunteers who provide free legal services to needy clients at nine locations in the City of Philadelphia. They help people with legal issues like expungements, immigration, child custody, will and estates, and illegal evictions, all in the Name of Jesus. During consultations it is customary for the lawyer to offer prayer for each client along with legal advice. The reality and relevance of the Gospel is put on display as these Christian lawyers put their faith and skills to work.

Here’s how you can help:
